SKU “stock keeping unit”, is a number (usually eight alphanumeric digits) that retailers assign to products to keep track of stock levels internally.
UPC “universal product code”, is a 12-digit numeric code that is attached to products wherever they are sold, for external use.
P.s.there are a lot of retailers that use UPCs as SKUs.
Why are SKUs important?
SKU numbers are important because they help you accurately track your inventory to prevent having phantom inventory and to pinpoint when to order new products so your merchandise never goes out of stock.
The easiest way to generate SKU numbers is through your point-of-sale (POS) system.
